WoW doing the whole e-sport PVP with prizes like guild wars...
except they are charging you to get involved...
They have youtube videos of Prophecies/Factions GVG tournament and those were pretty huge and exciting...i wish they would have continued that level of setting up tournaments.
Blizzard Entertainment will be sponsoring a worldwide tournament for its insanely popular PC MMO World of Warcraft, the company revealed today.
Set to begin in in April, the tournament will have players competing in three-on-three arena matches within a specialized realm that allows players to instantly create a level-70 character equipped with epic items.
It will start with two six-week rounds of online qualifiers in Europe, South Korea, North America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Each round will require players to pay an entrance fee, set at $20 for North American players and 15 EUR for those in Europe.
The top four teams from each region will progress to a regional tournament, where they will compete for upwards of $27,000 in prizes. The winners will them be invited to the global championship, which will award the victors with $120,000 in prizes, including a $75,000 cash payout.
"eSports is one of the most exciting facets of online gaming today," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "We're pleased to expand World of Warcraft's tournament options for players who want to focus mainly on the competitive aspect of the game."

nice. heard rumors about this but didn't really give it much thought.
Seems as if Blizzard is the multi-million company picking up ideas from a start-up garage business and taking it to the next level.

They should stop wasting their time and many other people's time with silly pointless games and go make Diablo III cinematics.
We don't even need the game, the cinematics will do.

WoW is the best game at copying everyone elses' idea and packaging it into one game.
Im glad they are copying this model when it comes to PvP.
Its about damn time.
Hopefully the industry standardizes it and grinding for PvP will be permanently a relic of the past.

WoW lost me at "pay for play" but other then that GW ganked alot of skill names from them. want a good laugh go to WoW's web and just look at there skills and then look at GW's same names on ALOT of them lol. bottom line GW has its niche' and WoW has theres. WoW is much more immersive where GW seems to be more team based.

Ugh, why the hostility? I mostly see ANet as a branch off of Blizzard so I tend to tolerate alot of the similarities between the two franchises. And it doesn't surprise me either to see them think similarly, although at times they do "copy" each other.

Guild Wars WAS doing it perfectly and could have continued it on until they saturated the skills
by saturated i mean they kept adding too many skills pvp wise and classes that each campaign came out would change the landscape instead of keeping the great core game they had
Its like creating a starcraft tournament and then changing the rules 180 for the next tournament leaving out the previous playerbase who enjoyed that current game
thats why you saw many of those oldschool guilds leave and move on because the game changed so much with each campaign and addition of new classes/skills

It's $20 USD to enter the tournament and be able to create a character on the tournament server.
Might want to add that into the OP.
